Wind turbine project in Schipkau faces weather delays
Construction of a record-breaking wind turbine in Schipkau, located in the Lusatia coal region of Germany, has faced delays due to adverse weather and strong winds. The project, led by the company Gicon, aims to create the world's tallest wind turbine, reaching a total height of 365 meters with a hub height of 300 meters.
The structure is an engineering innovation featuring a lattice tower and steel construction composed of approximately 2,000 tons of steel and 22,000 individual parts. The turbine utilizes a telescopic mechanism to lift the inner tower to its final position. While the final height increase was pushed from the previous Sunday to the coming week, a local community festival proceeded as planned.
Developers view this XXL prototype as a key project for the energy transition, testing whether such massive structures can significantly increase electricity yields for future wind farms. The German Wind Energy Association (Bundesverband Windenergie) considers it the largest wind turbine in the world, noting that conventional turbines typically have hub heights well below 200 meters.
