Schipkau wind turbine construction

Overview

The construction of the record-breaking wind turbine in Schipkau, Brandenburg, has reached completion. Led by the Dresden-based Gicon Group and commissioned by the Federal Agency for Leap Innovations (SPRIND), the structure has achieved its final height of 365 meters with a hub height of 300 meters. This makes it the tallest wind energy installation globally and the second-tallest structure in Germany, trailing only the Berlin TV Tower.

To reach this height, engineers utilized a specialized telescoping steel lattice mechanism and a strand jack system to hydraulically raise the inner tower, as no cranes were available for such an altitude. This technology allows the 3.8-megawatt turbine to access stronger, more consistent wind speeds. According to Gicon CEO Jochen Großmann, this stability could potentially allow for a power increase of up to 220 percent compared to conventional models, aiming to provide more consistent, base-load-capable electricity.

As the project nears its scheduled November 2026 commissioning, Gicon is looking toward future scaling. While the current prototype has a 3.8 MW capacity, future versions are expected to exceed 7 MW. If the research proves economically viable, Gicon plans to implement the technology in small pilot wind farms of three to five turbines. Long-term strategies include deploying up to 100 units in Germany and potentially developing ‘double-layer’ wind farms that combine tall and short models to optimize land use and retrofit existing wind parks.

The project, funded with 25 million euros by SPRIND, is expected to supply electricity to approximately 7,500 households with an annual yield between 18 and 33 million kilowatt-hours. The initiative marks a significant transition for the Lausitz region from coal mining toward renewable energy production.
