Windstorm hits Sorrento Peninsula and Naples area

A violent windstorm and hailstorm struck the Naples area and the Sorrento Peninsula, causing significant disruption and damage. The sudden weather event brought heavy rain, strong gusts, and sand, catching residents and tourists by surprise.

In several municipalities, fallen trees, utility poles, and debris blocked roads. Specific incidents included a fallen tree in Piano di Sorrento, a downed power pole near a cemetery in the same town, and a collapsed canopy in Meta that forced traffic to stop. In Sant’Agata, fallen trees rendered a road impassable.

Maritime and coastal activities were also impacted. In the Port of Naples, wind and a waterspout caused movement in docked vessels, disrupting boarding operations at Beverello. Small boats faced difficulties returning to shore, and ferry and hydrofoil services in the Gulf of Naples experienced disruptions. While there were reports of fear among beachgoers in Castellammare and Sorrento, no injuries were reported.
