Severe weather in Amalfi Coast and Naples area

Severe weather, including torrential rain, heavy winds, and hailstorms, has impacted the Amalfi Coast, the Sorrento Peninsula, and the Naples area. Initial reports focused on the Amalfi Coast and Positano, where heavy rain, fog, and temperature drops caused critical traffic conditions on the SP 425 provincial road. As the weather event progressed, the impact expanded to include violent windstorms and waterspouts.

In the Sorrento Peninsula and Naples, storms caused physical damage, including fallen trees and downed utility poles that blocked roads in towns such as Piano di Sorrento, Meta, and Sant’Agata. In Piano di Sorrento, specific incidents included a fallen tree and a downed power pole near a cemetery, while a collapsed canopy in Meta forced traffic to a halt. Maritime operations were disrupted at the Port of Naples, where wind and a waterspout caused movement in docked vessels and disrupted boarding at Beverello. Ferry and hydrofoil services in the Gulf of Naples also experienced disruptions.

Recent developments indicate escalating severity. In Positano, a violent storm prompted a search and rescue operation for a young woman reported missing on a jet ski. The Sorrento Peninsula experienced power outages and the suspension of Circumvesuviana train services. During resulting traffic congestion, Carabinieri officers assisted a woman in labor to reach a hospital.

Beyond these areas, extreme weather included a tornado in Spinesante and heavy flooding in Bagnara Calabra. In Tropea, falling rocks from a cliffside injured five people on a beach. Severe storms and tornadoes also struck the Strait of Messina.
