Winnie the Pooh celebrates 100 years since first book publication
The literary character Winnie the Pooh marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of A. A. Milne’s classic book, which first arrived in bookstores on October 14, 1926. Created by Milne and illustrated by E. H. Shepard, the stories follow the adventures of the honey-loving bear and his friends—Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo—in the Hundred Acre Wood.
The character's origins are rooted in real life, inspired by the stuffed animals of Milne’s son, Christopher Robin. The name Winnie was inspired by a black bear named Winnipeg at the London Zoo, while Pooh was the name of a swan. The setting of the stories was inspired by Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, England.
To commemorate the centennial, various celebrations and releases are taking place globally. The New York Public Library is hosting an exhibition featuring original illustrations and historical objects. Disney is marking the milestone with new merchandise and themed experiences at its parks, while companies like Funko and JAKKS Pacific have released special collections. The character has evolved from a beloved children's book icon into a global pop culture phenomenon through decades of film and media adaptations.
