Winnie-the-Pooh literary history and centenary
Overview
The literary legacy of Winnie-the-Pooh, created by A.A. Milne and illustrated by Ernest Howard Shepard, has reached its centenary following the original publication on October 14, 1926. The character’s origins trace back to a 1924 poem and a 1925 mention in the ‘Evening News’. The stories were inspired by Milne’s son, Christopher Robin, and his collection of toys, which included a bear originally named Edward before being renamed Winnie after a bear at the London Zoo. This bear was a Canadian black bear cub named Winnipeg, purchased in 1914 by Canadian veterinarian and lieutenant Harry Colebourn. After Colebourn was deployed to the Western Front during World War I, the bear was placed in the London Zoo for safety.
Many characters from the Hundred Acre Wood, such as Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo, were based on real toys now held in the New York Public Library. While characters like Owl and Rabbit were literary inventions, the setting was inspired by the Ashdown Forest and Cotchford Farm in East Sussex, England. The 17th-century Cotchford Farm served as the Milne family home and provided the inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood.
To mark the 100th anniversary, global tributes have emerged. In Poland, libraries in Warsaw’s Białołęka district and the Zielona Library have hosted literary contests and workshops for children. In the United Kingdom, the centennial has prompted discussions regarding the character’s massive media franchise and the “complex history of licensing and legal battles” between the estate and Disney. Commercial celebrations continue with Ty releasing a special Disney-branded plush collection, alongside existing commemorative programs from Aeon Fantasy, Funko, and Penguin Random House.
