Winnipeg police pursuit investigation launched after serious injury

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating a police pursuit in Winnipeg’s West Broadway area that left one person seriously injured.

The incident began around 1:45 p.m. on a Friday after police received a report of a possible abduction involving a man forcing a woman into a green, Jeep-style vehicle at River Avenue and Donald Street. Officers located a 2023 Ford Bronco matching the description in a nearby parking lot.

During the pursuit, the Bronco collided with a Winnipeg Police Service cruiser near Wellington Crescent. The vehicle then ran a stop sign at Broadway Avenue and Langside Street, striking a Mitsubishi Outlander and causing it to hit a building. The Bronco eventually crashed into parked cars and became inoperable.

All occupants of both vehicles were transported to the hospital. One passenger in the Outlander sustained serious injuries, prompting the investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit. The 18-year-old driver of the Bronco, Kesif Fontaine, was taken into custody.
