Winnipeg Police watchdog investigates death of man following Taser use
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating the death of a 42-year-old man following an encounter with the Winnipeg Police Service.
According to reports, police responded to multiple calls early Sunday morning regarding a man behaving erratically and removing his clothing on McMeans Avenue East. One caller reported that the man and a woman were experiencing adverse effects from drug consumption, while another resident reported that the man had broken into a home and assaulted them.
Officers located the man, who was naked, but he allegedly refused to comply with verbal commands and fled. During the subsequent chase, police used a Taser to subdue him. The man reportedly became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. A Winnipeg police officer sustained a minor leg injury during the incident.
