Świnoujście port expansion sparks compensation demands from local residents

Negotiations over compensation for large‑scale investments on the right‑bank of Świnoujście have entered a decisive phase. The Maritime Ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście, together with Gaz‑System, are discussing projects that could reshape access to the coastline and daily life for residents of Świnoujście, Przytor, Łunowo, Karsibór and surrounding areas.

Local authorities, led by Świnoujście mayor Joanna Agatowska, have been urged to publish a detailed list of the benefits expected from the agreement, including specific financial sums, timelines and implementation rules. Residents are calling for concrete measures such as road modernisation, new sidewalks, improved public transport, social infrastructure, noise reduction, environmental protection and recreational area upgrades, rather than generic promises.

The proposed “water tram” has been highlighted in public debate as a tourist‑oriented project. Critics argue that a tram primarily serving tourists does not constitute meaningful compensation for the everyday needs of the local community, which require practical, daily‑use infrastructure.
