Winter Jones dies after being left on Memphis daycare bus

A candlelight vigil was held in Memphis, Tennessee, to honor six-year-old Winter Jones, who died from heatstroke after being left on a daycare bus. Winter, who was non-verbal and autistic, was being transported from Kid University daycare to Macon Hall Elementary School when the incident occurred.

According to family members, Winter was not noticed on the vehicle for several hours during sweltering summer heat. Her uncle noted that her neurological disorder prevented her from being able to advocate for herself or alert others to her presence. Memphis police reported that the child was found in critical condition around 3:30 PM and later died; her father stated her body temperature had reached 109 degrees.

Local and state investigators are currently working to determine why the child was not removed from the bus. The Memphis Shelby County School Board has expressed its intention to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
