Wisconsin Tightens Livestock Import Rules to Block New World Screwworm

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection issued a temporary order, effective July 21, to strengthen import requirements for livestock and other warm‑blooded animals. The measure targets the New World Screwworm, a parasitic fly whose larvae can infest living tissue, which has recently re‑emerged in Texas and New Mexico. Importers must now provide a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection that confirms the animal did not originate in an affected area, obtain a DATCP permit at least 48 hours before transport from active zones, and document that inspections found no screwworms within five days of movement along with any treatments applied. The order remains in force until the state veterinarian lifts it. Officials urge producers to enhance biosecurity and monitor animals for unusual wounds, seeking to safeguard Wisconsin’s livestock, pets, wildlife and public health while federal and state agencies continue broader containment efforts.
