Wisin announces Universidad del Perreo to study reggaeton history

Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Wisin, born Juan Luis Morera Luna, has announced the creation of the Universidad del Perreo (UDP). The institution, which will be headquartered in Cayey, Puerto Rico, aims to study, preserve, and disseminate the history, evolution, and culture of reggaeton as a cultural, artistic, and scientific discipline.

Wisin stated that after more than 30 years in the music industry, he feels a responsibility to protect the legacy of a movement that transformed the global music landscape. The project seeks to provide the genre with the academic rigor and respect it deserves.

The proposed curriculum includes unique subjects such as Applied Rhythm, Reggaeton History, and the Epistemology of Flow. Additionally, the UDP plans to establish a Center for Advanced Studies in Cadence, Dembow, and Urban Culture, alongside exchange programs and scholarships for international students. A pre-admission process is currently available on the official website, which features a countdown to the project's formal opening.
