Wisin releases ‘La Universidad del Perreo’ to celebrate reggaeton history
Puerto Rican musician Wisin has released a new album titled ‘La Universidad del Perreo’, a project designed to pay tribute to the origins and history of reggaeton. The album features a lineup of veteran artists acting as ‘professors’ to represent different facets of the genre, including Ivy Queen, Jowell y Randy, Trébol Clan, and Franco El Gorila.
Beyond the music, Wisin intends to use the concept to provide cultural education. Following an announcement that led 2 million followers to register on a dedicated website, the artist plans to release video content covering topics such as the history of urban music, production, composition, and the business of the music industry. Wisin emphasized the importance of documenting the movement’s history, noting that just as salsa and bolero have established histories, the urban genre deserves similar recognition after evolving from a criticized movement into a multi-million dollar industry.
