Wixárika community protests in Jalisco over cartel violence
Hundreds of Wixárika people from the Tateikie community (San Andrés Cohamiata) have protested in Guadalajara to demand security following a wave of violence attributed to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The mobilization follows the recent kidnapping of the community’s communal property commissioner and his family in the El Vergel del Carrizal area. Although they were released, they showed signs of physical violence. This incident follows a previous kidnapping of the commissioner’s father in April.
As a result of the insecurity, the community has suspended basic and upper secondary education, traditional ceremonies, and communal activities. Residents also reported being without electricity and communication. The protesters are demanding an integral security strategy, a formal working table with community authorities, and justice for the ongoing violence that has affected the region since 2020.
