Wixárika community security crisis in Jalisco

The Wixárika community in northern Jalisco, specifically from San Andrés Cohamiata, has reported a significant deterioration in security due to violence allegedly linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Residents noted that essential services, such as education and healthcare, have been severely disrupted, with workers often requiring military or National Guard protection to enter the region.

Following the kidnapping of local authorities and residents, tensions rose during a visit by Jalisco Secretary General of Government Salvador Zamora Zamora. The meeting ended without agreements amid protests and reports of a police officer firing a shot into the air. The Jalisco government stated the dialogue was postponed because community leaders required the presence of federal and municipal representatives.

In response to continued violence, including the kidnapping of a communal property commissioner and his family, hundreds of Wixárika people mobilized in Guadalajara. The community has suspended traditional ceremonies, communal activities, and both basic and upper secondary education. Protesters are demanding a formal security strategy, justice, and a working table with community authorities to address the insecurity that has affected the region since 2020.
