Spain: Hospital expansion, forest fire stabilization, and local administrative updates

The Marina Baixa University Hospital is undergoing a major transformation, with the Generalitat planning to allocate 29.4 million euros in 2026 toward reform and expansion works. The total budget for the project now exceeds 102 million euros, aiming to increase capacity through 113 new beds, a new 14-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and upgraded diagnostic equipment including new CT and MRI machines. The emergency department will also see significant reorganization and expansion, including a new 12-bed short-stay unit.

In Alicante, Deputy Mayor Manuel Villar addressed a proposal from the residents of Nueva Tabarca to become a minor local entity, stating that the city council has seen no reason for the request. Villar highlighted recent municipal investments in waste management and recycling infrastructure on the island, noting that while service boat issues occurred, regular service has been restored.

Meanwhile, a forest fire in the Collserola Natural Park has entered a stabilization phase after burning 35 hectares. Emergency services reported that 35 people were evacuated from the Torre Baró area, but no further evacuations are currently expected as crews work to extinguish hotspots.

In Valencia, the Abierto València 2026 contemporary art week is scheduled for September 17–25. The event, organized by LAVAC, will feature 18 exhibition spaces and galleries offering free programming, including guided tours and urban routes.
