El Niño intensification expected to drive extreme global weather through 2027

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a high-certainty alert regarding the intensification of the El Niño phenomenon. Experts predict a nearly 100% probability that the event will persist until February 2027, with its peak intensity expected toward the end of 2026.

Driven by exceptionally warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, the phenomenon is expected to reach a 'very strong' intensity. Ocean surface temperatures have already risen significantly, with some deep water regions recording anomalies of up to 8 degrees Celsius above the 30-year average.

The global implications are severe, with increased risks of extreme weather including floods, droughts, and intense heatwaves. The WMO warns that this event could deliver a massive blow to global economies, communities, and supply chains. Some projections suggest the combination of El Niño and global warming could make 2027 the hottest year on record. Additionally, the World Food Programme has noted that the phenomenon could place approximately 50 million people at risk of acute hunger.
