Wojciech Król faces corruption allegations involving EU funds
The European Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the Sejm to hold Civic Coalition MP Wojciech Król accountable and to authorize his arrest and temporary detention. Investigators allege large-scale corruption, witness tampering, and the use of influence within various public institutions in the Silesia region.
The investigation focuses on the illegal procurement of EU subsidies for the company Silesia Invest regarding the ‘Stara Huta’ office complex project. Prosecutors claim that after an initial rejection, Król—acting through an intermediary—offered a guarantee to secure over 27 million PLN in funding in exchange for a 5 percent commission, totaling more than 1.3 million PLN. Ultimately, the regional board approved the support, and the MP allegedly was to receive a bribe of 350,000 euros.
The European Public Prosecutor's Office emphasized that leaving the MP at liberty would prevent the full collection of evidence. They noted that Król has already attempted to interfere with the investigation by pressuring relatives of a detained intermediary to influence legal representation and obtain information about the proceedings.
