Wolfgang Bosbach opposes AfD ban proceedings

CDU politician Wolfgang Bosbach has expressed opposition to initiating a ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Speaking on the ntv talk show ‘Blome & Pfeffer’, Bosbach warned that a ban attempt carries a high risk of failure and could result in a ‘gigantic prestige success’ for the AfD.

Bosbach argued that a legal proceeding would allow the AfD to dominate domestic political debate for two to three years. He suggested that the party gains attention through scandal and polarization rather than political proposals. Furthermore, he cautioned that pursuing a ban might create the impression that political opponents are unable to compete with the party through standard political means.

While other CDU members, such as North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst, have called for working groups to address the constitutional handling of the AfD, Bosbach maintains that simply holding unconstitutional positions is insufficient and that active political struggle is required.
