Wolfram Weimer calls for reforms to ARD and ZDF

German Minister of State for Culture and Media, Wolfram Weimer, is calling for significant reforms to the country's public broadcasters, ARD and ZDF. Describing current structures as “crusty and outdated,” Weimer emphasized the need for greater efficiency to address existing structural and acceptance issues.

Weimer suggested that the broadcasters should refocus their programming on their core mandate of quality journalism, education, information, and culture. He proposed reducing the amount of “shallow series, crime dramas, and sports” in favor of more informative content.

While Weimer declined to comment on specific rumors regarding the potential merger of ARD institutions or the privatization of ZDF, he defended the broadcasting fee, referring to it as a “compulsory contribution” (Zwangsbeitrag) that serves an important purpose.
