Wollongong residents and planners challenge high-rise proposals

Residents and planning authorities are raising concerns regarding several proposed high-rise residential developments in Wollongong. A local community group, ‘Wrong for the Gong’, is organizing protests against multiple skyscraper proposals in the CBD and Flinders Street precinct, arguing that the scale of development will damage the city’s character and quality of life.

Specific projects under scrutiny include a stage two development at Keira Place, which seeks to increase building height limits to 103.7 metres, and a proposed 38-storey tower near North Wollongong railway station by Urban Property Group. The NSW Planning Department has expressed significant concerns regarding the 38-storey tower, noting that its scale deviates from the Wollongong City Council’s Flinders Street Urban Design Framework and pre-lodgement advice.

Issues cited by officials and residents include potential impacts on iconic views of Mt Keira and the Illawarra Escarpment, flood constraints, inadequate parking spaces, and lift capacity concerns. The Planning Department has suggested the developer may need to ‘reconsider the height’ of the tower to better align with local urban design principles.
