Wollongong high-rise development disputes

In Wollongong, residents and planning authorities are contesting several proposed high-rise residential developments. A community group, ‘Wrong for the Gong’, is organizing protests against skyscraper proposals in the CBD and Flinders Street precinct, claiming the scale of development will harm the city’s character and quality of life.

Specific projects under scrutiny include a stage two development at Keira Place, which seeks to increase building height limits to 103.7 metres, and a 38-storey tower proposed by Urban Property Group near the North Wollongong railway station. The NSW Planning Department has raised significant concerns regarding the 38-storey tower, stating its scale deviates from the Wollongong City Council’s Flinders Street Urban Design Framework.

Key issues cited by officials and residents include potential impacts on views of Mt Keira and the Illawarra Escarpment, flood constraints, inadequate parking, and lift capacity. The Planning Department has suggested the developer may need to ‘reconsider the height’ of the tower to align with local urban design principles.
