Woman dies protecting children during Colombia earthquake

Yenci Lorena Restrepo, a woman approximately 30 years old, died in Cali, Colombia, while attempting to protect her two children during a 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The incident occurred in the Alto Meléndez neighborhood when a wall collapsed while she was attempting to lead her children, aged four and six, to safety from their second-floor residence.

According to her husband, Sebastián Íguira, Restrepo shielded the children by throwing them forward to absorb the impact of the falling debris. While Restrepo died instantly and Íguira sustained a fractured leg, both children survived the collapse. The six-year-old son has been discharged from medical care, while the four-year-old daughter remains hospitalized with a minor skull fracture but is reported to be making satisfactory progress.
