Italy railway network faces maintenance works and fatal accidents

Italy's railway network is experiencing significant disruptions due to a combination of major infrastructure maintenance and fatal accidents.

In the Pavia-Voghera region, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has completed the third phase of maintenance on the Po river railway bridge. This work, part of the Milano-Genova line upgrade, allows trains to return to dual-track operation starting October 1, 2026. However, nighttime road closures on the provincial road ex S.S. 35 are scheduled from October 5 to 19.

In Tuscany, maintenance works related to the Viareggio underpass will cause major service changes and cancellations on the Tyrrhenian line during three specific weekends: October 2–4, October 16–18, and November 12–15.

Tragic incidents have also impacted service. On September 28, two separate pedestrian strikes occurred: a woman was killed near the Villasanta station in Brianza, and a 29-year-old man died at the Milano Greco Pirelli station. These incidents caused temporary suspensions of service on several lines, including those connecting Milan to Lecco, Sondrio, and Bergamo, necessitating the use of replacement bus services.
