Woman Unknown receives standing ovation at Venice Film Festival

The film ‘Woman Unknown’, directed by Danish filmmaker May el-Toukhy, received a seven-minute standing ovation during its world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The film, which is the first Latvian co-production to be included in the festival's main competition, was largely filmed in Riga, with 25 of its 28 shooting days taking place in Latvia.

Set in Denmark shortly after World War II, the drama explores the theme of female invisibility and the social consequences faced by women accused of relationships with German soldiers. International critics, including those from The Guardian, have praised the film as a sophisticated thriller and a poignant story of survival, highlighting the performance of lead actress Mathilde Arcel.

The film is a co-production between Denmark, Sweden, and Latvia. It is scheduled to open the Riga International Film Festival on October 15.
