Mammoth Danube low water Ryahovo Ruse Museum heat wave

Record low water levels in the Danube, caused by recent heat waves and drought, exposed a collection of woolly mammoth bones on the riverbank near the Bulgarian village of Ryahovo. Researchers from the Regional History Museum in Ruse identified a mandible, two tusks, a shoulder blade, ribs and other fragments, confirming the specimen as Mammuthus primigenius. The animal is estimated to have stood about five metres tall and weighed between seven and eight tonnes, and the remains likely date to the late Pleistocene or early Holocene, making them several thousand years old.

The bones are being carefully extracted to prevent damage, then will be conserved and displayed at the museum in Ruse, roughly 30 km from the discovery site. The unusually low Danube levels have also revealed shipwrecks in Hungary and Serbia and forced the temporary shutdown of Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant.
