Danube low water reveals mammoth bones

Overview
Record‑low water levels on the Danube in late July 2026 exposed a fragmentary woolly mammoth skeleton near the village of Ryahovo, close to Ruse, Bulgaria. A local resident alerted the Regional History Museum, whose curators identified a mandible, two tusk fragments, a shoulder blade, ribs and other bone pieces belonging to a young individual. Scientists plan further study to determine the exact age and origin of the remains.
Two days later, museum specialists reported additional fragments and refined the age estimate to between 7,000 and 10,000 years, suggesting the river may have transported the remains to the site. Conservator Krasimir Kirov emphasized careful conservation for future display.
On 1 August, researchers confirmed the animal as a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) about five metres tall and weighing seven to eight tonnes, and began careful extraction to prevent rapid deterioration before exhibition in Ruse. The same drought‑driven low water has also revealed World‑War‑II shipwrecks in Hungary and Serbia and forced the temporary shutdown of Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant because the river is too shallow for cooling.
