Danube low water reveals mammoth, Thracian and Roman remains

Overview

Record-low Danube levels in late July 2026 continued to expose a fragmentary woolly mammoth skeleton near Ryahovo, Bulgaria. Museum researchers added that, beyond the initial jaw and tusk pieces, they recovered a mandible, two tusk fragments, a shoulder blade and several ribs, confirming a specimen about five metres tall and weighing 7–8 tonnes. The bones, dated to several thousand years ago, are being carefully extracted and conserved for future exhibition at the Regional History Museum in Ruse, roughly 30 km from the find site.

On 5 August, museum director Nikolay Nenov reiterated that the remains likely belong to a mammoth that died around 4,000 years ago, while curator Krasimir Kirov highlighted the scientific value of the concentrated bone assemblage. The ongoing drought-driven low water has also revealed World-War-II shipwrecks in Hungary and Serbia and forced a temporary shutdown of Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant.

By 8 August, archaeologists identified an additional subfossil discovery: a horse jawbone estimated to be approximately 3,000 years old. Professor Nenov suggested the find may date back to the beginning of the Iron Age. Experts hypothesize the jawbone may have originated from a Thracian cult complex on the higher riverbanks and was moved into the riverbed by landslides or geological shifts, potentially linking the find to ancient Thracian sacrificial sites in the area.

By 12 August, extreme heat exceeding 38 °C further lowered water levels, exposing parts of an ancient Roman bridge commissioned by Emperor Constantine I in 328 AD. Researchers noted the receding waters provide an exceptional opportunity to study the structure, which is typically submerged.
