Woolworths violence surge prompts calls for national protection laws

A 7NEWS political reporter, Josh Martin, performed a citizen’s arrest after a man allegedly launched a violent attack at a Woolworths supermarket. The incident involved the man throwing himself over a counter and hurling racist abuse and threats at staff. Martin intervened to calm the situation and bring the individual down.

The event highlights a significant rise in retail violence across Australia, with reports indicating approximately 270 violent incidents occur in shops daily. Woolworths reported 7,000 incidents this year, 420 of which involved knives or blades. The offender involved in this specific incident had previously been linked to nine other incidents at the same store.

In response to the surge in violence, major retail chains are calling for nationwide workplace protection orders. While these orders already exist in the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia—showing a 92 per cent reduction in reoffending in the ACT—they have not yet been implemented in Queensland or the Northern Territory.
