Torricella Sicura construction site protests end with wage payments
A series of high-stakes protests at the Piano Grande construction site in Torricella Sicura has concluded following the release of funds for unpaid wages. The demonstrations, which involved workers climbing scaffolding and threatening to jump, were triggered by significant salary arrears.
Negotiations led by Filca Cisl representative Giancarlo De Sanctis and local law enforcement resulted in the local contracting company, Casa Attiva, providing an immediate advance of 2,000 euros to each worker. This action was taken to address the disappearance of a subcontractor from Modugno, Bari, who had failed to fulfill payment obligations.
Investigations are underway regarding the subcontractor's business practices. Union leaders reported that several workers had been unknowingly dismissed weeks prior while continuing to work. Filca Cisl plans to coordinate with Inps, Inail, and Cassa Edile to verify employment status and ensure all outstanding wages are recovered. The local firm has also proposed the direct hiring of workers to bypass future subcontracting issues.
