Italy workplace fatalities rise amid series of industrial accidents

Italy is facing a rise in workplace fatalities and injuries, according to recent data and a series of recent tragic incidents. Inail reports indicate a 7.1% increase in workplace deaths between 2023 and 2026, with injury reports rising by 6.3%.

Recent fatalities include Salvatore Terracina, a 58-year-old carpenter who died in a construction site in Sant’Arcangelo, and Pasquale Riillo, a 51-year-old worker killed by machinery in a sand quarry in Polesine Parmense. Other incidents include a 63-year-old worker who suffered a fatal heart attack at a cemetery in Bitonto and a 34-year-old worker in Parma who sustained severe injuries after becoming trapped in machinery.

Labor unions, including Cgil, Cisl, and Uil, have expressed deep concern, calling for stricter controls, better training, and legislative interventions to prioritize safety over production speed. In Calabria, union leaders have specifically requested the establishment of a regional fund to support the families of workplace victims.
