Workplace fatalities in Siena spark safety concerns
The CGIL trade union has raised alarms following three workplace deaths in the province of Siena over the last nine months. Simone Arcuri, the confederate secretary of CGIL Siena, noted that the province ranks among the top fifty in Italy for the incidence of such incidents relative to its population.
Arcuri highlighted that the victims are predominantly aged between 50 and 59, suggesting that an aging workforce is a critical factor in occupational safety. He criticized business models that prioritize profit over worker protection, treating safety as a mere cost. Furthermore, regional data indicates that 89% of inspected companies in Tuscany are irregular.
Additional concerns include the lack of protections for workers in the final stages of supply chains and the phenomenon of unreported accidents, where workers fear retaliation for reporting injuries.
