World Alzheimer Day initiatives promote social inclusion in the Netherlands

World Alzheimer Day, observed on September 21, focuses on the theme ‘Ik blijf meedoen’ (I keep participating). The initiative aims to promote a society where people living with dementia can continue to participate in sports, culture, and community life through small adjustments and increased social understanding.

In the Midden-Holland region, various municipalities including Gouda, Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, Krimpenerwaard, Waddinxveen, and Zuidplas are organizing activities. These include information markets, cultural events such as singing choirs and theater lessons, and physical activities like yoga and walking to encourage movement and social contact.

In Dongen, the Dementievriendelijke Gemeenschap Dongen is organizing a creative workshop titled ‘SAMEN KUNST MAKEN’ (Making Art Together). Participants with memory problems and their caregivers will create individual colorful pieces that will be combined into a single large communal artwork to be displayed at a central location in the municipality.
