World Bank and Asian Development Bank Boost Funding for ASEAN Power Grid
The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have jointly pledged support for the ASEAN Power Grid Financing Initiative, a project aimed at creating a fully integrated regional electricity network by 2045. A study by ASEAN power utilities estimates that more than USD 750 billion is required for transmission lines and generation capacity. The combined backing is expected to unlock private investment and accelerate the grid’s development, which currently provides about 7.7 GW of regional capacity.
The initiative builds on earlier ASEAN commitments, including the 2002 Roadmap for Integration and the recent success of the Lao‑Thailand‑Malaysia‑Singapore Power Integration Project, which doubled its export capacity to 200 MW in 2024. With rising energy security concerns amid global oil price volatility, the reinforced financing is positioned as a catalyst for broader clean‑energy cooperation across Southeast Asia.
