Philippines Reclassified as Upper-Middle-Income Economy by World Bank
On July 2, 2026 the World Bank upgraded the Philippines to upper‑middle‑income status, meeting the $4,850 per‑capita GNI threshold under the Atlas method. The reclassification reflects an average 5.8% annual growth over the past five years, driven by a diversified expansion in manufacturing, services, overseas remittances and a robust business‑process‑outsourcing sector. Government reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment, improving infrastructure and modernising telecoms and renewable energy have been credited with supporting this momentum.
Despite the national milestone, officials note that the average figure masks significant regional gaps. In Mindanao, growth lags behind the national average, with persistent challenges such as poverty, weak institutions, high electricity costs and limited industrial capacity. Policymakers stress that sustaining inclusive growth will require targeted investments and reforms to lift underserved regions and avoid the middle‑income trap.
