World Breastfeeding Week Highlights Benefits and New Toolkit in Tunisia

During World Breastfeeding Week, paediatric specialist Dr. Nasser al‑Din Mahmoud Al‑Sharif stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, noting its role in child growth, immune protection and reduced maternal risk of breast and ovarian cancers. He urged early initiation within the first hour after birth and warned against unnecessary formula use.

In Tunisia, UNICEF and the Ministry of Health released a comprehensive toolkit for health professionals and civil‑society groups. The package includes 15 interactive modules, posters and guidance on early initiation, exclusive breastfeeding, managing common challenges, and safe milk expression and storage for working mothers. Developed with German and USAID support, the toolkit aligns with WHO standards and the national nutrition strategy for 2024‑2025, aiming to improve infant health indicators across the country.
