World Conservation Day and Drought Awareness Drive Global Environmental Focus

On June 17, the United Nations‑sanctioned World Day for Combating Desertification and Drought marked its 2026 edition with the theme “Pastures: recognize, respect, restore”. The day emphasized the vital role of pastures, which cover about 54 % of the planet’s land and sustain roughly two billion people. International studies cited by the Italian Association for Organic Agriculture warned that rising temperatures and reduced humidity have already cut global cereal yields, while half of the world’s pastures are considered degraded or at risk. Researchers from the Politecnico di Torino and the University of Delaware presented a new framework for assessing crop vulnerability to drought, underscoring the urgent need to restore pasture ecosystems to safeguard food security and biodiversity.
