Global environmental conservation and stewardship efforts
Overview
Global environmental awareness efforts have focused on conservation and stewardship through various international observances. In July, World Conservation Day emphasized the protection of ecosystems, forests, and wildlife, with local groups in Italy conducting ecological walks and clean-ups.
This period also highlighted the impact of desertification and drought. The United Nations-sanctioned World Day for Combating Desertification and Drought focused on the theme “Pastures: recognize, respect, restore,” noting that rising temperatures and reduced humidity have decreased global cereal yields and threatened half of the world’s pastures.
Following these efforts, the 17th Ecumenical Day of Creation was announced for the period of September 1 to October 4. Centered on the theme “Have you realized how vast the earth is?”, the observance encourages religious cooperation to address climate change and biodiversity loss through the lens of environmental stewardship.
