World Environment Day clean‑up events in Portugal and Mozambique

On June 5, 2026, the municipality of Setúbal, Portugal, marked World Environment Day with a series of activities. Volunteers from local schools began the day with a beach‑cleaning operation at Praia da Saúde, followed by a collective aerial photograph and a ceremony to raise the ECO XXI flag recognizing environmental best practices. The afternoon included a Kids Dive Summit at the Sebastião da Gama secondary school and continued events under the “Setúbal is Sea” program until June 14.

In Pemba, Mozambique, activists, public agencies and civil‑society groups conducted a large beach‑cleaning campaign on the same day. Participants collected 157 kg of plastic bags and PET bottles, 111 kg of mixed waste including fishing nets, 92 kg of used footwear and 17 kg of cardboard and recyclables. The effort, under the slogan “Climate Action is Urgent,” aimed to raise awareness of marine ecosystem protection and combat littering.

Both initiatives were part of global celebrations of World Environment Day, emphasizing local community engagement to address marine pollution.
