World Environment Day spurs Altamira school oil‑recycling drive and Quintero wetland cleanup

On World Environment Day, COMAPA Altamira in Mexico launched a campaign to collect used vegetable oil, designating three local schools—CETis 78, CBTis 105 and CETMAR 43—as collection points and integrating water‑conservation lessons.

In Chile, the municipality of Quintero organized a clean‑up of the Los Juanes wetland, with participation from the municipal environment department, the Chilean Air Force, a recycling firm and other agencies. Volunteers removed plastics, bottles, glass, cardboard, mattresses and other bulky waste. Lizet Lobos, head of the municipal environment department, warned that "everything we generate as waste reaches the wetland's underground water layers and harms its flora and fauna," while Air Force lieutenant Macarena Cartes praised the effort, noting "we have removed a large amount of trash, including recyclable material."
