World Food Programme cuts Gaza aid due to funding shortages

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced significant reductions to its humanitarian operations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank due to a severe funding shortfall. Starting in October 2026, the agency will reduce the number of monthly aid recipients in Gaza from 1.6 million to 1.1 million, leaving approximately 500,000 people without support.

Beyond headcount reductions, the WFP is implementing several austerity measures. Food rations for remaining recipients will be halved, with families receiving one food parcel instead of two and smaller quantities of wheat flour. Daily hot meal distributions will drop from 250,000 to 150,000 portions. Additionally, cash assistance for 75,000 families will be reduced, with monthly allowances falling from 1,250 shekels to 750 shekels.

These cuts come as approximately 1.4 million people in Gaza—roughly 67 percent of the population—face crisis levels of food insecurity or worse. WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau stated that the agency urgently requires $450 million over the next six months to maintain critical operations in both Gaza and the West Bank. The agency emphasized that the cuts are driven strictly by financial constraints rather than a lack of humanitarian access.
