World Food Programme halves West Bank aid due to funding cuts
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced it is halving its food assistance in the West Bank due to severe funding shortages. Starting this month, the number of aid recipients will be reduced from 400,000 to 200,000 people.
Shaun Hughes, the WFP representative for the Palestinian territories, warned that this reduction comes at a time when food needs in the region have more than doubled compared to two years ago. The agency noted that approximately 900,000 people in the West Bank are currently facing food insecurity. Factors contributing to this crisis include intensified settler violence, Israeli military operations, movement restrictions, and widespread displacement since October 2023.
A recent WFP analysis found that 76 percent of households in the West Bank have experienced significant income declines, with one-third of families unable to afford a nutritious diet. The agency is prioritizing the most vulnerable households but warned that further cuts may be necessary. Additionally, the WFP expressed an urgent need for $386 million over the next six months to support food-insecure populations across both Gaza and the West Bank.
