World Health Organization issues new brain‑health guidelines emphasizing nutrition

The World Health Organization (WHO) released the second edition of its Guidelines for Reducing the Risk of Cognitive Decline and Dementia, updating the 2019 recommendations. The 2026 document cites that about 57 million people lived with dementia in 2021, with more than 60 % in low‑ and middle‑income countries, and estimates that up to 45 % of cases could be prevented through modifiable lifestyle factors. It stresses lifelong protection of brain health through a balanced diet rich in natural foods, fiber and bioactive compounds, regular physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and active social participation.

Brazilian nutraceutical specialist Durval Ribas Filho, president of the Brazilian Association of Nutrology (ABRAN), highlights that nutrition is now recognized as a pillar of brain function. He notes that dietary patterns can lower the risk of cognitive decline, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, epilepsy and migraine, and that the gut‑brain axis plays a role in mood, memory and inflammation control.
