World Meningitis Day awareness efforts focus on prevention and vaccination
World Meningitis Day is observed on October 5, a date established by the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations (CoMO) to gain support from the World Health Organization. The day aims to increase global awareness regarding meningitis, a serious infectious disease that causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes.
Meningitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or tumors. If left untreated, it can lead to severe brain damage, disability, or death. While it is most common in children who have not been vaccinated, it can affect individuals of any age through respiratory droplets, saliva, or contact with contaminated food and drinks.
Vaccination remains the most effective prevention method, specifically targeting pathogens like meningococcus types A and C and pneumococcus. In response to the awareness day, the Telde City Council in Spain has committed to illuminating its main building in green to symbolize support for those affected and to promote public health information.
