World News Day: 1,000 newsrooms unite to defend trusted journalism
More than 1,000 newsrooms across 100 countries are participating in World News Day to advocate for the importance of trusted, fact-based journalism. The global campaign, which peaks on September 28, coincides with the United Nations' International Day for Universal Access to Information.
Organizers and media experts warn that the industry faces an existential threat from the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence, social media algorithms, and widespread disinformation. These technologies are accused of driving polarization, eroding traditional media business models, and making it increasingly difficult for audiences to distinguish professional reporting from influencer content or synthetic media.
In various regions, the challenges vary from shrinking newsroom budgets and layoffs to direct physical threats against journalists in conflict zones. Participants are using the campaign to demonstrate the rigorous processes behind news production—such as source verification and data analysis—to encourage the public to ‘choose trusted journalism’ in an era of information abundance and increasing cynicism.
