World News Day journalism advocacy campaign

Overview

The World News Day campaign involves over 1,000 newsrooms across 100 countries advocating for the importance of trusted, fact-based journalism. Organizers highlight existential threats to the industry, including generative artificial intelligence, social media algorithms, and widespread disinformation, which they claim drive polarization and erode traditional media models.

In Brazil, the initiative, known as Dia Mundial do Jornalismo, has expanded to include over 130 participating institutions, such as the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) and the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (ABERT). The campaign focuses on demonstrating factual methodologies to distinguish professional reporting from fake news while addressing themes of press freedom, media education, and the impact of technological shifts on news financing.
