World Savings Day marks 102nd anniversary
World Savings Day, established in 1924 at an international congress in Milan, marks its 102nd anniversary this October. Originally intended to encourage household savings and bolster trust in financial institutions following the instability of World War I, the day highlights the evolving landscape of modern finance.
In the Czech Republic, the Financial Market Guarantee System provides statutory protection for deposits. Funds held in current, savings, or term accounts are automatically insured up to an equivalent of 100,000 EUR per depositor per institution. If legal conditions for compensation are met, the system initiates payouts within seven working days.
Recent research by Ipsos for the Financial Market Guarantee System indicates a gap in awareness among younger demographics; 38% of individuals aged 16 to 30 believe they would only receive a portion of their funds in the event of a bank failure, despite 72% stating that knowledge of deposit insurance provides reassurance.
