World War II Memorial vandalism leads to federal felony charges

Melissa L. Farris, a 41-year-old woman from Kentucky, has been arrested and charged with two federal felonies following the vandalism of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The charges include depredation against property of the United States and destruction of veterans’ memorials, both of which carry potential prison sentences of up to 10 years.

The incident occurred on August 13 at the National Mall. According to investigators, the memorial was defaced with red, green, and pink spray paint, including the message “Clean hands Dirty $”. Additionally, a substance was poured into the memorial's fountain, causing it to overflow with large amounts of soap bubbles.

Farris allegedly livestreamed the act on social media under the name Melissa Lovewell, stating she was “cognitively aware” of her choices and intended to use the incident to push a whistleblower case. U.S. Park Police identified her after reviewing social media footage and recognizing her from a separate arrest for unlawful camping on federal property just days prior.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro and President Donald Trump both condemned the act, describing it as a “despicable attack” and an insult to the veterans honored by the monument.
