Overview

On August 13, 2026, the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., was vandalized. The incident involved spray-painting the phrase “Clean hands, dirty $” in neon colors—including red, green, and pink paint—across the Atlantic Pavilion and dumping soap into the memorial’s fountain, which caused it to overflow with bubbles.

Melissa L. Farris, 41, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, was arrested and charged with two federal felonies: depredation against property of the United States and destruction of veterans’ memorials. Authorities identified Farris through witness photographs and social media videos posted under the name Melissa Lovewell. A U.S. Park Police officer reportedly recognized her from a previous arrest for unlawful camping in the area. Farris allegedly livestreamed the act, stating she was “cognitively aware” of her choices and intended to use the incident to push a whistleblower case.

The Department of the Interior and the Veterans of Foreign Wars condemned the act as an “utter disgrace” and a “profound disrespect” to the 400,000 Americans who died during the war. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro and President Donald Trump also denounced the vandalism, with the latter calling it an insult to American heroes and Pirro describing it as a “despicable attack.” Farris appeared in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, where prosecutors are seeking to keep her detained. If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.
