World War II Memorial vandalized in Washington, D.C

Melissa L. Farris, 41, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, has been arrested and charged with two federal felonies following the vandalism of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The incident, discovered on Thursday, involved spray-painting the phrase “Clean hands, dirty $” in neon colors across the Atlantic Pavilion and dumping soap into the memorial’s fountain, causing it to overflow with bubbles.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced the charges of depredation against property of the United States and destruction of veterans’ memorials. Both offenses carry potential penalties of up to ten years in prison. Farris made her first appearance in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, on Friday, and federal prosecutors are seeking to keep her detained.

The Department of the Interior and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have both condemned the act, describing it as an “utter disgrace” and a “profound disrespect” to the 400,000 Americans who died during the war. President Donald Trump also denounced the vandalism on social media, calling it an insult to American heroes.
