World Youth Day 2027 preparations begin for Seoul gathering

Preparations are underway for World Youth Day 2027, which is scheduled to take place in Seoul, South Korea, from August 3–8. The event will be the first World Youth Day held in Asia since 1995 and the first hosted in South Korea.

During an international preparatory meeting involving delegates from over 160 dioceses and religious congregations, Seoul Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung emphasized that the gathering is an invitation for young people to encounter faith amidst modern uncertainties. The theme for the event is “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

In Australia, the Archdiocese of Sydney has officially launched its pilgrimage to the event. The program offers several pathways for participants, including direct travel to South Korea, a visit to Japan prior to the congress, or participation in mission and immersion experiences. Organizers aim to unite young Catholics from various parishes, schools, and universities for the global gathering.
